How to Create Custom Stickers with Inkscape

Ever wanted to colour in one of our outline designs to make your very own custom stickers? It’s easier than you think! Our outline SVG files act like a digital colouring book. Here’s a quick guide using Inkscape, a brilliant and free design program.

Step 1

Create the Perfect Colouring Base

Open your SVG file. First, select the design with your mouse. Now, go to the top menu and click Path > Trace Bitmap. A panel will open—don't be intimidated! Just make sure "Brightness cutoff" is selected and click the "Apply" button. You can now close that panel. Delete your orginal image.

Step 2

Add Your Colours

t's time for the fun part! Select the new outline shape. Now, click the "Fill Bounded Areas" tool (the paint bucket) from the left-hand menu. Pick a colour from the palette at the bottom and click within a section of the solid shape to fill it. Continue this process until you've added all your colours.

Step 3

The Final Touch for a Flawless Outline

Now, select your original outline. Go to the menu and click Path > Break Apart. This is the final pro trick to ensure your outline sits perfectly on top of your colors with no white halo.

Step 4

The Big Reveal!

You're ready to export it as a PNG for beautiful, homemade stickers!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use SVG for stickers?

Yes, absolutely! SVG files are perfect for creating stickers, especially when you use a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette. They give you complete control over the size and customisation.

Is SVG good for printing stickers?

SVG files are fantastic for printing stickers. Because they are vector files, you can scale them to any size—from a tiny planner sticker to a large decal for a laptop—without ever losing quality. The lines will always be perfectly sharp and crisp.

Is it better to use SVG or PNG for stickers?

It depends on your project! Use the SVG if you want to change colours (like in the Inkscape guide above) or if you need to resize the design perfectly for a cutting machine. Use the PNG if you love the simple black and white design as is and just want to print it quickly and easily onto sticker paper.

Can I use your sticker SVG for my shop?

Yes, you absolutely can, and we love to see it! You are welcome to sell any finished physical products you create with our files, such as vinyl decals, printed sticker sheets, t-shirts, or mugs. The only restriction is that the original digital SVG and PNG files themselves cannot be shared or resold.
