How to Animate a Static Emote on Twitch: Step-by-Step Guide with Easy Animate

Twitch offers streamers and creators an interactive way to connect with their audience through emotes. Animated emotes, in particular, can add flair and personality to your streams. With Twitch’s Easy Animate feature, even a beginner can transform static PNG images into animated emotes effortlessly. Here's how you can create animated emotes for Twitch in just a few simple steps.

Why Use Easy Animate?

Easy Animate is a built-in Twitch tool designed to help you create animated emotes without requiring specialized software or advanced animation skills. By selecting from pre-set animations like "Shake" or "Spin," you can bring your static emotes to life in minutes. This guide walks you through the process to ensure your emotes are ready for Twitch audiences.

Before You Begin: File Requirements

To ensure your emote uploads successfully, your PNG file must meet Twitch’s requirements:

  • Format: .png
  • Resolution: Between 112x112 pixels and 4096x4096 pixels
  • File Size: Maximum of 1MB
  • Shape: Must be a square
  • Animation: The uploaded image must not be animated

Ensure your static PNG meets these requirements before moving forward.

Step 1: Upload Your Static Emote File

  1. Navigate to your Twitch Creator Dashboard.
  2. Head to the Emotes section under "Viewer Rewards."
  3. Click on the Upload Emote option and choose Easy Animate as your animation type.
  4. In the upload interface, click the upload icon within the left-hand square to select your PNG file.
  5. Twitch will automatically scale your uploaded emote to its required sizes: 112px, 56px, and 28px.

Step 2: Select an Animation Template

Once you’ve uploaded your file, Twitch provides a variety of pre-designed animation templates to make your emote dynamic.

From the Choose Animation dropdown, you can preview and select from the following options:

  • Shake: Creates a jittery shaking effect, great for high-energy or comedic emotes.
  • Rave: Adds a flashy, pulsating effect that’s perfect for party or celebration-themed emotes.
  • Roll: Rotates your emote in a loop, giving it a playful, rolling motion.
  • Spin: Spins the emote like a top for a vibrant, dynamic touch.
  • Slide In: Animates the emote sliding into the frame, ideal for entrances or dramatic reveals.
  • Slide Out: Makes the emote exit the frame, adding a sense of motion or transition.

Experiment with each animation to find the one that best fits your emote's purpose and theme.

Step 3: Name Your Emote

After selecting an animation template, you’ll need to give your emote a name.

  1. Locate the Enter Emote Name field.
  2. Choose a name that reflects your emote’s purpose (e.g., "Love" for a heart emote or "Hype" for a cheering emote).
  3. Twitch automatically combines this name with your unique emote prefix to create the full emote code. For example:
    • Prefix: MyChannel
    • Emote Name: Love
    • Final Emote Code: MyChannelLove

Step 4: Upload and Review

Once your emote is ready:

  1. Click the Upload button to finalize the process.
  2. If you uploaded your emote into a specific slot, it will automatically be assigned to that slot.
  3. After submission, your emote enters the manual review process.

Step 5: Await Approval or Expedite Review

All emotes, whether static or animated, must go through Twitch’s manual review process to ensure they comply with community guidelines.

  • While under review, your emote will display a Pending Approval status with a watch icon. During this time, it won’t be visible to your viewers.
  • For faster approval, Twitch Partners in good standing and Affiliates meeting certain criteria can benefit from Instant Emote Upload.
